Sometimes it is an advertisement, in fact they are just that pretty vases with no definite purpose but gather traffic. Most of the time this is the reason why your visitors clicked the back button! Give them a purpose to stay and go back to your site without the splash page.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

Your site should be user-friendly avoid using complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors get lost and don't know how to navigate your site, they will get pissed off and go to other site.
4) Provide clear indication of where the user is
When visitors are really interested of browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. By doing this, you already having their interest, you are putting your visitors to stay longer and browse relevant information or navigate into any section of the site easily.
